UPCOMING THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY SAFE DRIVING REMINDER

By Mark Wells Nov 26, 2024 | 11:56 AM

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Illinois State Police (ISP), and law enforcement agencies across the state are increasing patrols and urging the public to buckle up and drive sober this Thanksgiving. From now through December 2, hundreds of enforcement zones and patrols will focus on seat belt compliance and identifying impaired drivers.

Last year, during the Thanksgiving holiday period from November 22 to 26, IDOT recorded 2,842 crashes in Illinois, resulting in 16 fatalities. Alcohol was a factor in six of those fatal crashes.

“Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate with friends and family,” said ISP Division of Patrol Col. Chris Owen. “If you plan to drink, particularly on Blackout Wednesday or ‘Drinksgiving,’ make arrangements for a safe ride, such as using a rideshare service, designating a sober driver, or having someone who hasn’t been drinking pick you up. And always wear a seat belt—it’s a choice everyone will be grateful for.”

Illinois law mandates that all passengers, regardless of seating position, must wear seat belts. Additionally, children are required to ride in a child safety seat until they are at least eight years old.

The increased enforcement is funded by federal grants administered by IDOT, with support from ISP and local agencies. These efforts align with IDOT’s “It’s Not a Game” campaign, which raises awareness about the dangers of impaired driving, distracted driving, work zone safety, pedestrian safety, motorcycle awareness, and seat belt use.
