The Jefferson Fire Protection District has been busy responding to two major fires within 24 hours. On Monday morning around 8:44 , the Jefferson Fire Protection District received a call reporting a trailer fire with entrapment in the northern part of Mt. Vernon. An off-duty officer, along with a Mt. Vernon Police Department officer, arrived on the scene to find light smoke coming from a single-wide trailer. They entered through the front door and discovered an occupant with mobility issues attempting to exit the building. The occupant was safely assisted out just as engines from Jefferson and Mt. Vernon Fire Departments arrived. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, resulting in minimal damage to the structure. The occupant was evaluated by Litton Ambulance, and the other responding departments were subsequently canceled.

The following day, Tuesday at 3:33 AM, fire dispatch reported a fully engulfed building fire, prompting a full response. The Kell Assistant Chief confirmed the fire involved an abandoned structure close to an occupied building. Firefighters evacuated the nearby occupied structure and quickly contained the fire before it spread, preventing further damage.

Mutual aid was provided by the Kell, Webber, Wayne City, Mt. Vernon departments, and Litton Ambulance, while Woodlawn and McLeansboro covered Jefferson Station 1. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
