A new law in Illinois that took effect on July 1st provides more protections for freelance workers. The Freelance Protection Act mandates a written contract between employers and freelancers, ensuring that freelancers are paid promptly for their work.
Cynthia Haliemun, the Director of the MBA Program at Quincy University, highlighted the diverse range of freelance work, including event planning, photography, catering, writing, and construction. She emphasized that freelancers, as temporary workers, often encounter challenges in receiving timely payment for their services. The contract requirement not only benefits freelancers by guaranteeing payment but also serves to protect businesses.
Haliemun emphasized the importance of having written contracts to prevent disputes and provide clarity for both parties. Under the act, freelancers must be compensated on the day the job is completed or within 30 days of its conclusion. Having a formal contract in place is crucial for freelancers as it establishes a clear paper trail and facilitates recourse in case of payment disputes with clients.
