The 5th Division of the American Legion in Illinois hosted its High School Constitutional Oratorical Contest at the Centralia American Legion Post 446 last Saturday (January 11th).

Two contestants from Fairfield High School in Fairfield, IL, took the stage to showcase their oratory skills. Each participant presented two speeches: the first, an eight to ten-minute presentation on a self-chosen topic that explored the rights, duties, obligations, and privileges related to the United States Constitution. The second speech was based on one of four predetermined topics, with both contestants addressing the same theme.

Following their performances, a panel of judges evaluated the speeches and determined the winner.

Grady Simpson emerged as the First-Place speaker, with Kayden Wells securing Second Place. Grady will move on to the state contest, while Kayden will serve as the alternate. Should Kayden be unable to attend, she will be awarded a $500 scholarship for her performance at the division level, and she might still get the chance to compete at the state event.

Grady, a Junior at Fairfield High School and son of Nathan and Jessica Simpson, was sponsored by American Legion Post 176, where Commander Tom Seaman expressed his pride in Grady’s accomplishment.

Kayden, a Senior and daughter of Robert and Nena Wells, was sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary Unit 176. President Jane Engelkes echoed the sentiment of opportunity for Kayden.

Simpson will proceed to the American Legion Department of Illinois State Contest on March 1st, in Springfield, IL. Here, they will compete for scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $2,000. The first-place winner in the state contest will receive a $2,000 scholarship and the opportunity to advance to the American Legion National Contest, where a grand prize of $25,000 awaits.

Contest Chairman Ralph Rounds extended his gratitude to Grady, Kayden, their families, Mrs. Roberta Biggs, American Legion Post 176, Auxiliary Unit 176, Centralia Post 446, and all participants and staff for contributing to the success of this year’s contest.
