The court case of former Wabash County Sheriff’s Deputy Chase Cheadle has encountered yet another delay. During a preliminary hearing Thursday, special prosecutor Brian Towne and defense attorney Jonathan Turpin informed the court that they are negotiating a potential settlement, prompting a request for a continuance. Cheadle’s next court appearance is scheduled for February 27th, making it the third consecutive month since November 14th that his preliminary hearing has been postponed.

Cheadle, who served as the sheriff’s department’s canine handler, faces a total of eight charges, including four counts of official misconduct, one count of theft, one count of cruelty to animals, and two counts related to animal owner duties. Notably, five of these charges are classified as felonies. The situation escalated last July when Cheadle found his canine partner, Kiki, unresponsive, leading to his arrest following an investigation. He eventually resigned from the sheriff’s department on August 8th.
