White County continues to excel in oil production, surpassing other counties in the state. A new report from the Illinois Petroleum Resources Board reveals that White County has achieved its highest production levels since 2020, extracting over a quarter of a million barrels more than in 2023. In 2024, White County produced more than 2.2 million barrels, outpacing the combined output of the second, third, fourth, and fifth highest-producing counties—Marion, Crawford, Wabash, and Fayette—and accounted for over 30% of the state’s total production.
The increase of 260,985 barrels in 2024 compared to 2023 not only bolstered White County’s performance but also supported several counties that experienced declines. Overall, Illinois saw a production increase of 27,914 barrels in 2024. While ten counties exceeded their 2023 production figures, 35 counties produced less, with declines ranging from just 2 barrels to over 46,000 barrels. Notable drops in the region included Lawrence (-46,000), Wabash (-39,000), Wayne (-17,000), and Hamilton (-13,000). In addition to White County, the biggest gains were seen in Sangamon (25,600), Jefferson (22,900), and Edwards (7,700).
