For anyone traveling southbound toward the Kentucky-Illinois State Line, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announces that work zone lane restrictions on the I-24 Ohio River Bridge in Metropolis will begin today (Monday).

The three-year I-24 Ohio River Bridge Rehabilitation Project is being led by IDOT, with lane restrictions set to continue until October 14th. Details for project phases in 2026 and 2027 will be provided later.

The work will involve replacing expansion joints, performing deck overlays, making structural steel repairs, painting the bridge, and conducting various concrete repairs.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction, and concrete barriers will be installed across the bridge, with width restrictions in effect. Expect delays and consider alternative routes.

Message boards will be placed on both the Illinois and Kentucky sides of the bridge to inform drivers about the work zone. The entire project is anticipated to be completed by September 2027.

Additionally, due to weight, height, and width restrictions, large commercial vehicles and semi-trucks are prohibited from crossing the U.S. 45 Ohio River “Brookport” Bridge between Paducah and Brookport.
