WITH ELECTRICITY PRICE SPIKES COMING, ENVIRONMENTAL AND INDUSTRY GROUPS PITCH REFORM

By Mark Wells Mar 5, 2025 | 11:53 AM

Illinois is facing potential energy shortfalls and expected price spikes this summer, driven by rising electricity demand from data centers and a backlog in renewable energy project approvals. Consumer and environmental advocates are pushing for legislative reforms to stabilize electricity prices and enhance grid reliability.

The Illinois Clean Jobs Coalition (ICJC) is advocating for new bills that would increase energy efficiency targets for utilities, enhance programs for low-income households, and introduce “time of use” electric rates to manage demand. Concerns have been raised by utility companies about the financial implications of these proposals.

Additionally, a separate proposal aims to incentivize energy storage development, allowing for better management of renewable energy generation and demand fluctuations. Both legislative initiatives are currently under consideration before the General Assembly, with discussions ongoing among lawmakers and advocates.

With lawmakers aiming for a resolution by May 31st, the urgency is clear as rising electricity costs loom for residents, particularly in northern Illinois.
