Two Big Wrecks On I-64 Friday

At least one person is dead and five others injured in two separate accidents that occurred Friday on Interstate 64 in Jefferson and Washington counties.

State police say the first accident occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m. Friday near Woodlawn, with the second accident happening about three hours later near Nashville in Washington County.

In the first crash onI-64 eastbound at milepost 64, state police report a semi hit the rear of another semi, causing it to crash into a car. The driver of the first truck died from his injuries.  Reports said he was hauling around 200 batteries.  The Mt. Vernon Fire Hazmat Team was called in to assist at the scene.

The second accident occurred on I-64 westbound at milepost 59.  Police said traffic had been backed up from the earlier crash when one vehicle hit the back of another, causing a chain reaction wreck involving three cars. The  drivers and passengers in all three vehicles were injured, with several people flown to the hospital with serious injuries.

The names of those involved in the crashes were not released, and the accidents remain under investigation.
