A tense situation ended safely Saturday morning in Mount Vernon, thanks to the swift actions of the Mount Vernon Fire Department.

Around 11 a.m., two painters became stranded between 135 and 150 feet above the ground after their scaffolding collapsed at a water tower near 19th Street and Waterworks Road. An apparent equipment malfunction was to blame.

The Mount Vernon Fire Department, along with the MABAS Division 45/68 Technical Rescue Team, responded quickly. Using tag lines to stabilize the damaged scaffolding, they were able to make repairs to the motor and bring both individuals safely back to the ground.

The cause of the equipment failure remains under investigation.
