Rodney Lynn Legg, 75, of Wayne City

Rodney Lynn Legg, 75, of Wayne City, IL passed away on Monday, April 28, 2025 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO.  Rodney was born September 25, 1949 in Mt. Vernon, IL to Lowell & Dorothy (Niccum) Legg.  On June 22, 1968 he married Brenda (Guilliams) Legg, who survives.  He graduated from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL in 1971 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Education.

Rodney owned & operated Legg & Sons Oil Company from 1968-1994, and he also owned & operated Shell Food Mart in Wayne City and Whatta Wash Car Wash in Mt. Vernon.  He was also a farmer, and he was a veteran who served 6 years in the U.S. Army Reserve.  He served on the board of the Wayne County Housing Authority, and the First National Bank in Wayne City.  He was a former member of the Wayne City Jaycees club, and a member of the East Central Illinois Archaeological Society.  He attended the Keenes Christian Church in Keenes, IL.

Rodney enjoyed farming, and he enjoyed studying history and researching Native American artifacts.  He was a devoted husband, and he was very proud of his three sons. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Rodney is survived by his wife Brenda Legg of Wayne City, 3 sons: Kevin Legg & wife Mandi of Sapulpa, OK; Bryan Legg & wife Ellen of Carmi, IL; and Bradley Legg & wife Nina of Wayne City; 8 grandchildren: Taylor McNamara & husband Grant of Sapulpa, OK; Emily Garner & husband Brandon of Sapulpa, OK; Warren Legg of Carmi, Emma Legg of Carmi, Claire Legg of Carmi, Reese Legg of Wayne City, Ridge Legg of Wayne City, and Raina Legg of Wayne City; 3 great-grandchildren: Joseph McNamara, Juliet McNamara, and Bennett Garner; a brother Dennis Legg & wife Kelley of Wayne City, 2 sisters: Linda Bryant & husband Bernie of Jonesboro, AR and Cheryl Genta & husband Bob of Fairview Heights, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Lowell & Dorothy Legg, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law Edward & Joyce Guilliams.

Funeral services for Rodney Lynn Legg will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2025 at the Keenes Christian Church in Keenes, IL with Minister Tim Coonce officiating.  Visitation will be held from 5 pm until 8 pm on Friday, May 2 at the church.  Interment will follow the funeral service at Thomason Cemetery in Wayne City.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to the Thomason Cemetery Fund, and will be accepted at the church or at Young Funeral Home in Wayne City.
