By Mark Wells May 1, 2025 | 11:55 AM

The Illinois State Police (ISP) will be conducting Occupant Restraint Enforcement Patrols (OREP) throughout May in several counties, including Clay, Effingham, Fayette, Hamilton, Jasper, and Wayne. The purpose of these patrols is to promote safety belt and child safety seat laws, emphasizing that all vehicle passengers, whether in the front or back seat, are required to be buckled up.

Safety belts are a crucial safety feature, saving over 14,000 lives annually. Despite their importance, nearly half of the occupants killed in traffic crashes were not wearing seat belts. The ISP’s goal with these patrols is to improve compliance with safety restraint laws through education, inspections of child safety seats, and enforcement actions.
