A Mt. Carmel, Illinois family is pleading for the return of a firefighter’s ashes they say were stolen from his home along with other personal belongings.
Published reports say Glen Markle’s stepdaughter, Kimberly Walston, indicated someone had broken into the home and stole the ashes and multiple items off his pillow. She indicated her stepfather had wanted to be buried with his wife, who is battling cancer, and made a public plea this week for the return of the ashes.
Several locations in Mt. Carmel have agreed to accept the recovery of the ashes, no questions asked, including Mt. Carmel Mayor Joe Judge, local firefighters and the funeral home.
The family believes the ashes may have been taken sometime after Glen Markle’s wife moved out of the house about three years ago while undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Glen had served as firefighter for over 40 years at the Mt. Carmel Fire Department. Anyone with information is asked to return the ashes anonymously to the Short-Cunningham Funeral Home, Mt. Carmel City Hall, Hope Fellowship Church or the Mt. Carmel Fire Department.
