Work continues on the Interstate 64 bridges over the Wabash River near Grayville. The westbound bridge has been closed for several weeks, and crews have already removed the entire bridge deck.
The next step involves dismantling the steel beams over the river spans. Starting next week, construction crews will begin driving piles to support the new bridge foundations.
According to an official from the Illinois Department of Transportation, the project remains on schedule. However, high river levels caused by recent flooding have presented challenges for contractors.
The $136 million project is divided into three phases. The first phase, which involved building crossover lanes, has been completed. During the current second phase, traffic is being rerouted to the eastbound bridge while the westbound span is demolished.
Two-way traffic will remain in place until both new bridges are finished, with completion of the bridges expected by fall 2028. Final project completion is anticipated by fall 2029.
