By Mark Wells May 16, 2025 | 6:00 AM

The National Weather Service in Paducah is warning residents to brace for a potentially dangerous severe weather outbreak expected to unfold this afternoon and evening across the region.

Forecasters say scattered severe thunderstorms are possible earlier in the day, with large hail being the primary threat. However, the situation is expected to escalate rapidly later in the afternoon.

According to the NWS, supercell thunderstorms are likely to develop and merge into an intense line of storms that will move east to northeast across the area. These storms could produce a range of hazardous conditions, including:

Strong and potentially long-track tornadoes

Widespread damaging winds, some of which may be locally intense

Very large hail, posing a risk to vehicles, property, and crops

“This is not a routine weather event,” the NWS said in a statement. “The entire region needs to closely monitor for watches and warnings and be prepared to take action.”
