Authorities in McLeansboro are investigating an explosion that occurred late Thursday morning near the 200 block of North Locust Street.

According to the McLeansboro Police Department, officers responded to the area around 11:20 a.m. following reports of an explosion outside a residence. Upon arrival, they discovered that a male individual had detonated what he described as a “homemade firework.” The blast left behind an 18-inch crater in a ditch in front of the home.

During their investigation, officers discovered a large number of undetonated items still on the property. Given the potential risk, the Illinois Secretary of State Bomb Squad was called in to assist with the scene.

Authorities obtained a search warrant and removed all materials identified as possible explosive hazards.

The case remains under investigation. Once complete, findings will be forwarded to the Hamilton County State’s Attorney’s Office for review and potential charges.
