Fifth grade is often a turning point in a young person’s life—a time when they begin making independent decisions about who they want to become, often with less guidance from parents, grandparents, and teachers. Recognizing this critical stage, the Fairfield Lions Club has made it a mission to encourage and honor students who exemplify strong character and citizenship.

This year, the Fairfield Lions Club invited all fifth-grade classrooms in Wayne County to help select peers who consistently display the values of good character throughout the school year. Teachers and students were asked to nominate up to five classmates per school who embody qualities such as helpfulness, kindness, inclusivity, good sportsmanship, and community service.

“These are the traits we look for because Lions serve,” said a club spokesperson. “Lions Clubs exist to bring people together who are willing to give their time and effort to improve their communities—and ultimately, the world. That starts with young leaders who care for others.”

Some of the key traits considered in the nominations included:

Always being helpful and considerate

Volunteering to assist classmates or teachers

Demonstrating gratitude to school staff, such as cafeteria workers

Staying after school to lend a hand

Showing kindness and inclusion

Displaying leadership and good sportsmanship

Participating in community service

At Wayne City Grade School, two outstanding students were selected to receive the Fairfield Lions Club Good Citizen Award for 2025: Elsie Talbert and Kashton Newton.

The Fairfield Lions Club, along with local educators, commended all the nominees and expressed pride in the positive example these students set for their peers and their communities.
