A Fairfield man is facing a series of serious charges following a violent confrontation with police after allegedly stealing a previously impounded motorbike from the Wayne County Jail.

Thursday night just a little after 9 o’clock,  officers observed 42-year-old Edward A. Riley walking in Fairfield with a motorbike. Authorities quickly recognized the vehicle as the same bike Riley had been arrested on Wednesday for driving on a revoked license, at which time the bike was seized and impounded at the Wayne County Jail.

It was determined that Riley had returned to the jail moments earlier and unlawfully removed the impounded bike.

Wayne County Deputies, along with Fairfield Police Officers, located Riley and attempted to place him under arrest. According to officials, Riley immediately resisted arrest and engaged in a physical struggle with officers. He was taken to the ground and eventually placed into custody.

While in the patrol vehicle, Riley allegedly continued to resist, attempting to headbutt and kick deputies, and even tried to kick out the windows of the vehicle. Once transported to the Wayne County Jail, his resistance escalated. Riley reportedly attempted to assault deputies again, refused to walk into the booking area, and had to be carried by officers. His aggressive behavior continued until he was ultimately restrained inside a confinement cell.

Riley now faces the following preliminary charges:

Aggravated Assault – Peace Officer

Aggravated Battery – Peace Officer

Driving While Driver’s License Revoked

Resisting or Obstructing a Peace Officer

Theft – Unauthorized Control Over Property Less Than $500

Riley is lodged in the Wayne County Jail pending a court appearance.
