As summer approaches, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is urging parents and caregivers to closely supervise children in or near water to prevent accidental drownings. In 2024, Illinois recorded 19 child drowning fatalities: eight in pools, four in lakes, four in rivers, two in ponds, and one in a bathtub. Tragically, nine of those children were aged five or younger.
New analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data by the Illinois Policy Institute reveals that since 2020, 84% of Illinois communities have experienced population declines—especially small towns. More than 900 of the state’s 1,294 communities with populations near 10,000 have lost residents over the past five years. Many former residents point to high taxes as a primary reason for relocating.
The 2025 Memorial Day Wall of Remembrance was unveiled last week in Springfield and will be on display in the Capitol rotunda through June. Featuring a rotating digital display of photos and written tributes submitted by citizens, the Wall honors those who gave their lives in service to Illinois and the nation. It is open to the public during regular Capitol business hours.
