The National Weather Service in Paducah has issued a Heat Advisory that remains in effect until 7 p.m. CDT Friday, warning residents across the region of dangerously high temperatures and humidity levels.

According to the advisory, daily heat index values are expected to range from 100 to 107 degrees, impacting portions of Southern Illinois, Southwest Indiana, Western Kentucky, and Southeast Missouri.

This marks the first prolonged stretch of oppressive heat and humidity for the season, and forecasters warn that health risks will increase with each successive day of extreme conditions.

Residents are strongly urged to stay hydrated, remain in air-conditioned environments, and avoid extended periods of outdoor activity. Authorities recommend checking in on elderly relatives and neighbors, as they are especially vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.

Additional safety measures include wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing, and limiting strenuous activities to the early morning or evening hours. Officials also urge people to recognize the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and take action immediately if symptoms occur.

The advisory comes as temperatures soar across the region, signaling a dangerous start to the summer season.
