Athletics Break Ground On New Las Vegas Stadium:
The Athletics are beginning to build their new stadium in Las Vegas. The A’s celebrated the groundbreaking of the franchise’s new Las Vegas stadium on Monday. The 1.75-billion-dollar, 33-thousand-person capacity ballpark is expected to be finished prior to the start of the 2028 season. Nevada and Clark County have already approved up to 380-million-dollars in public funds for the stadium. The stadium will be built on nine acres of the 35-acre site owned by Bally’s on the corner of Tropicana Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard. It will be Major League Baseball’s smallest stadium.

The Celtics and Trail Blazers have agreed to a trade. The Cs are sending veteran guard Jrue Holiday to the Blazers for guard Anfernee Simons and two second round picks. Holiday returns to Portland after he was originally acquired from the Milwaukee Bucks as part of the Damian Lillard trade. The 35-year-old has three years and over 104-million-dollars remaining on his contract. Simons is entering the final year of his deal.

The Mavericks are locking up a member of their frontcourt with a new contract. ESPN reports that Dallas is signing center Daniel Gafford to a three-year, 60-million-dollar deal extension. The deal will keep Gafford under team control through the 2028-29 season. The 26-year-old is scheduled to make around 14-million-dollars next season before the extension kicks in. Gafford’s 71-percent career field goal percentage is the best in the NBA since he was selected in the second round of the 2019 draft. He averaged 12.3 points and 6.8 rebounds through 57 games played last season.

The Pacers confirmed their worst-case scenario on Monday. An MRI revealed that star Tyrese Haliburton sustained a torn right Achilles tendon during Game Seven of the NBA Finals. The team did not announced a timeline for his return, but it’s likely that he will miss the entire 2025-26 season. The 25-year-old suffered a calf strain in Game Five, but insisted on playing through the injury.

The Nuggets are shaking up their front office this offseason. Denver has named Ben Tenzer as the team’s new executive vice president of basketball operations and hired Minnesota Timberwolves executive Jon Wallace as the executive vice president of player personnel. The Nuggets had also interviewed Miami Heat vice president of player personnel Eric Amsler and Golden State Warriors director of basketball operations Chuck Hayes for roles in their front office.

The owner of the Jets is diversifying his portfolio. Woody Johnson has agreed to buy a 43 percent stake in Premier League team Crystal Palace. The deal is worth 254-million-dollars, and will have to receive approval from the Premier League by passing the Fit and Proper Persons Test. Johnson attempted to purchase Chelsea in the past, but failed to do so.

Prosecutors in the Dominican Republic are suggesting prison time for Rays’ star Wander Franco. Lawyers say he should be sentenced to five years in prison for sexual abuse against a minor. Franco is accused of having a relationship with a 14-year-old girl and sending more than one-hundred-thousand dollars to her mother to keep the arrangement a secret. Franco hasn’t played in the MLB since 2023.

The Reds are moving on from an expensive slugger. Jeimer Candelario [[ JAY-mer can-duh-LAR-ee-oh ]] was designated for assignment on Monday. The infielder was on the IL with a back issue after hitting .113 in 22 games this season. Candelario was in the second year of a 45-million dollar deal and has a .237 batting average to go with 110 homers over his 10-year career.
>>Flyers Acquire Trevor Zegras From Ducks
The Flyers are swinging a trade for a young center. The team acquired Trevor Zegras from the Ducks on Monday in exchange for Ryan Poehling [[ PAY-lihng ]] and a second-round pick in Friday’s draft. Anaheim is also getting a fourth-rounder next year as part of the deal. Zegras was originally taken ninth-overall in the 2019 draft and tallied 12 goals and 20 assists in 57 games last season.
