U.S. CATTLE ON FEED NUMBERS REMAIN BELOW YEAR-AGO LEVELS

The number of cattle on feed across the United States continues to lag behind last year’s figures. According to a report released Friday by the USDA, there were an estimated 11.4 million head of cattle on feed as of June 1st—down 1% from the same time in 2024.

 

Placements into feedlots during May totaled 1.89 million head, marking an 8% decrease compared to last year. Meanwhile, marketings of fed cattle reached 1.76 million head, down 10% from 2024.

 

Also on Friday, the USDA mailed out its July cattle survey to approximately 18,000 cattle operations nationwide. The goal is to provide an updated snapshot of the U.S. cattle inventory, with the results expected to be published by the end of next month.
