FATAL APARTMENT FIRE IN MT. VERNON CLAIMS ONE LIFE, LEAVES ANOTHER SERIOUSLY INJURED

A tragic apartment fire in Mt. Vernon on Tuesday evening left one person dead and another critically injured.

 

According to the Mt. Vernon Fire Department, the blaze broke out around 7:25 p.m. on Tuesday at the 504 Short Street Apartments. Fire crews, including support from the Jefferson Fire Protection District and additional agencies, responded swiftly, with the first unit arriving in under three minutes.

 

Firefighters launched an immediate search and rescue effort. One victim was found and rescued through a window, while another was discovered during a primary search and removed through the front door.

 

Both individuals were transported to area hospitals—Deaconess Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital. One victim later succumbed to injuries, while the other was transferred to a burn center in St. Louis for further treatment.
