The Du Quoin State Fairgrounds, in partnership with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), will host a free Kids’ Fishing Day on Tuesday, July 8th, starting at 9 a.m. This fun and educational event is designed to introduce children to the joys of fishing while encouraging outdoor exploration.

“Fishing is a great sport that exposes kids to nature while teaching them the importance of patience and persistence,” said Jerry Costello II, Director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture. “Events like this free fishing day encourage our neighbors to visit the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds and take advantage of activities and opportunities throughout the year, not just during the fair.”

Fishing poles, bait, and basic instruction will be provided by IDNR. The event is free, but advance registration is required and limited to the first 25 children who sign up.

Participants under age 16 do not need a fishing license, but anyone 16 and older must have a valid license. Licenses cost $15 and can be purchased online or at authorized vendors across the state. Fishing licenses are not required for those who are blind, disabled, or actively serving in the military.

On the day of the event, attendees should meet at 9 a.m. in front of Expo Hall on the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds. Families are encouraged to bring sunscreen, bug spray, water, and a chair for comfort.

To register or for more information, call 618-542-1511 during office hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed on holidays).

In addition to the fishing day, the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds offers a variety of free summer activities, nature trails for hiking and biking, and picnic areas. Visitors can view the full calendar of events and explore camping opportunities on the fairgrounds’ website.
