A Jefferson County jury has convicted a 68-year-old Mt. Vernon man of First-Degree Murder and Murder Involving Mob Action in connection with the death of Patrick Williamson, a respected car salesman and cherished member of the community. Eddie Bennett was found guilty Wednesday following a trial held in the Second Judicial Circuit Court.

Williamson, who worked at Monken Toyota in Mt. Vernon, was the victim of a brutal crime that has shaken the community. The investigation into his death led to multiple arrests and charges. Bennett’s sentencing is scheduled for August 28th.  Mt. Vernon Police Chief Robert Brands released a statement following the conviction:

“I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the dedicated officers and investigators who committed many hours to this case, ensuring a thorough and conclusive investigation. I also want to recognize Jefferson County State’s Attorney Sean Featherstun and Assistant State’s Attorney Blake Jennings for their unwavering commitment to this case which resulted in a successful prosecution.

Tragically, one of the oldest and most horrific crimes—murder—claimed the life of Patrick Williamson. While no conviction can ever erase the pain of this loss, today’s verdict brings some justice to Mr. Williamson’s family. It also ensures Eddie Bennett is held accountable for his evil actions and no longer poses a threat to our community.

The Mt. Vernon Police Department remains steadfast in its mission to pursue justice for victims of violent crime and protect our community from those who seek to do harm. My deepest condolences remain with the family and friends of Patrick Williamson.”

Two additional individuals are also facing charges in connection to the case.

Laura Lee Beneway, 60, of Bonnie, has been charged with two counts of First-Degree Murder involving a forcible felony (robbery), one count of Concealing a Homicidal Death, and one count of Obstructing Justice. Her next court appearance is a pre-trial hearing scheduled for July 2nd.

Peter M. Harris, 66, of Mt. Vernon, is charged with two counts of First-Degree Murder involving a forcible felony, one count of First-Degree Murder (act with probability of death), and Obstructing Justice.
