Nutrient stewardship field days are making a comeback this summer as County Farm Bureaus across Illinois team up to highlight local conservation efforts and promote sustainable agriculture.
A total of 11 field days are planned throughout July and August as part of the Illinois Farm Bureau’s ongoing support of the Illinois Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategy (NLRS) — an initiative the organization has supported for over a decade. The closest local event will take place in Wayne County on Wednesday, August 21 at 5:00 p.m.
The Wayne County field day will spotlight the Nutrient Loss Inhibitor Demonstration Plot, a collaboration between Wayne County Farm Bureau and Wabash Valley Service Company. In 2025, the project will pivot to focus on nutrient use efficiency across all macronutrients, expanding to include four variations of supplemental macronutrient applications over a baseline fertilizer. Each treatment will be replicated multiple times across the demonstration field to ensure reliable data.
Attendees will hear from agricultural experts and conservation leaders, including Mike Wilson and Jay Tharp of Wabash Valley Service Company, John Pike of Pike Ag LLC, and John Jones Jr. from the University of Illinois.
The field days are funded through the Illinois Farm Bureau’s Nutrient Stewardship Grant Program, which supports four primary goals:
Educational outreach
Research to reduce nutrient loss from agricultural fields
Farmer engagement in stewardship strategies
Long-term progress toward NLRS goals
