New laws will go into effect today in Illinois. The state’s gas tax is going up by just over 48-cents per gallon. That makes Illinois the second-highest gas tax rate in the country. There will also be tax increases on Airbnb rentals, sports wagers, and tobacco. Also, hotels in Illinois with 50 or more rooms are now banned from providing small single-use plastic bottles with products like shampoo or body wash.
Illinois is taking steps to help high school students pursuing higher education. Governor Pritzker signed four bills into law that aim to improve college access and affordability. One measure streamlines the admissions process, eliminates unnecessary application fees, and expands access to postsecondary education through a new direct admissions program. The other three expand dual credit opportunities, require a FAFSA point of contact, and mandate FAFSA assistance options during school hours.
