The Cubs remain in first place in the NL Central at 52-and-35.

The Fourth of July tradition is going down on Coney Island in New York and this year’s event sees the return of 16-time champion Joey Chestnut. Last year Chestnut was banned from competing after controversy over a sponsorship deal with Impossible Foods. The women’s contest starts just before noon eastern. The men’s contest takes place at noon.

(Pittsburgh, PA) — The Steelers are rewarding their general manager. The team signed Omar Khan to a three-year extension on Thursday. The deal will take him through the 2028 season. The 48-year-old originally took over the GM role in 2022 when Kevin Colbert stepped down after 12 seasons. Khan is 29-and-22 in three seasons with Pittsburgh.

(Clackamas County, OR) — Former NBA guard Ben McLemore has been found guilty of first-degree rape. The verdict was announced Thursday following an eleven-day trial. The former Portland Trail Blazer committed the assault during his time with the team in 2021. McLemore’s defense team said he admitted to having sex but maintained it was consensual. The victim, a 21-year-old woman, says she was incapacitated due to heavy drinking and could not consent. McLemore was the seventh overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. He is scheduled for sentencing next week.

The Grizzlies, Jazz, 76ers and Thunder will simultaneously participate in the Salt Lake City Summer League. All 30 teams will descend on Las Vegas for the NBA 2K26 Summer League, which will run from July 10 to 20.

(Cleveland, OH) — Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz is under investigation by MLB for allegedly violating the league’s sports gambling policy. That’s according to multiple reports. Ortiz is being placed on “non-disciplinary paid leave” while the investigation is ongoing. The leave, negotiated between the league and the MLB Players Association, will last until after the All-Star break concludes. The 26-year-old starting pitcher was acquired by the Guardians in the offseason as part of a three-team trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Toronto Blue Jays.

(Raleigh, NC) — The Hurricanes have added one of the top free agents on the market. The Canes made a big splash after signing forward Nik Ehlers to a six-year, 51-million-dollar contract. Ehlers had spent his entire 10-year career with the Winnipeg Jets after being taken with the ninth pick in the 2014 NHL Draft. He has recorded 225 goals and 520 points in 674 career games.
