39-year-old Attila J. Caldwell of Fairfield, a former charge nurse supervisor at Fairfield Memorial Hospital, avoided multiple felony convictions last week by pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge.
Police responded to Caldwell’s home last April following a domestic dispute and discovered drugs and firearms. This led to five felony charges, including possession of methamphetamine, possession of a sawed-off shotgun, possession of a silencer, and FOID card violations.
During a hearing in Wayne County Circuit Court last Thursday, State’s Attorney Kyle Ellis approved a plea deal in which Caldwell pleaded guilty to a Class-A misdemeanor for possession of drug paraphernalia. As part of the agreement, all felony charges were dismissed. Additionally, charges of driving without insurance and driving on an expired registration were dropped.
Judge Matt Vaughan sentenced Caldwell to 60 days in the county jail, but the sentence was stayed. Caldwell was also ordered to complete 24 months of court supervision.
In December 2024, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) suspended Caldwell’s nursing license for at least six months due to meth possession. According to IDPH records, Caldwell’s license remains suspended.
