Illinois’ unemployment rate fell to 4.6% in June, marking its lowest level since August 2023 and the first monthly decline since February, according to data released Thursday by the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES).
The state also reached a record high in nonfarm payroll employment, surpassing the previous peak set in March. In June, payroll jobs increased by 9,400, bringing the total to 6,175,200 statewide.
Compared to June of last year, Illinois added 35,000 nonfarm payroll jobs. Industries driving those gains included private education and health services, government, and leisure and hospitality. Meanwhile, professional and business services, manufacturing, and trade, transportation and utilities saw some of the largest job declines over the year.
