As many as ten cars of a train derailed late Friday afternoon in rural Wabash County.
According to information obtained by WFIW News, the derailment occurred near the cities of Browns and Belmont. The derailment resulted in hazardous materials being spilled, including Sulphur and other chemicals. Several roads in the area were closed following the derailment. Mt. Carmel Mayor Joe Judge did confirm that the derailment happened outside of city limits off of Illinois Route 15 east of Browns, near Wabash County Road 170.
Reports from the scene said white smoke could be seen coming from the area of the derailment. Two employees of the train company were reportedly sent to the hospital for treatment of injuries. The first reports of the derailment came in shortly after 5:30 Friday afternoon.
