The Wayne County area’s hot and muggy weather will stick around for at least a couple more days, before a cold front will push through the area Wednesday night. According to the National Weather Service, an “Extreme Heat Warning” remains in effect until 8 pm tonight for the Fairfield and Wayne County Area. An Extreme Heat Warning is normally issued for dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 116 degrees. Authorities remind the public that heat-related illnesses can increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events. To avoid this, it is advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, and try to stay out of the sun as much as possible. You should also check up on relatives and neighbors, especially the elderly and never leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles as car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes. When outside, extra precautions should be taken, such as, wearing lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and limiting strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9-1-1.
