CWO3 (ret. USMC) Robert Brian “Bob” Duvall, 56, of Crossville died Friday, August 1, 2025, as the result of a motor vehicle accident in rural White County, Illinois.
Bob was born September 26, 1968, in Carmi, Illinois, the son of Henry “Leon” and Theresa (McMinn) Duvall. He was a 1986 Carmi Community High School graduate and left for boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California, in July that same year. Bob was one of seven Marines from the class of 1986 and the only one to stay and retire with 25 years of service as a Chief Warrant Officer 3.
Bob completed infantry training at Camp Pendleton and Sea School at MCRD San Diego and upon completion of training, was assigned as a Sea Duty Marine Abroad the USS Enterprise, the US Navy’s first nuclear powered aircraft carrier. He served as the Captain’s Orderly while on sea duty and completed his first enlistment as an infantryman stationed at Camp Pendleton.
Bob returned home following his first enlistment in 1990 before deciding to reenlist in the Marines, this time as a CH-46 mechanic. Bob loved this new duty and affectionately referred to the large, green, dual prop helicopters as “phrogs”. Once, during a training flight destined for Scott Air Base near St. Louis, he gained permission for his crew to make low-level flight over his hometown of Carmi, where his parents were able to see him in the side door of his “phrog”. His father, a combat veteran Marine of the Vietnam War, who passed away in 2021, was proud of his son.
Bob would reach the rank of E-7, gunnery sergeant, and served as a crew chief and door gunner aboard his aircraft before he was selected to attend officer training in Quantico, Virginia, where he was promoted to warrant officer. He rose in rank to Chief Warrant Officer 3 before retirement and his time in service included seven overseas deployments, numerous awards and decorations, including the Legion of Merit.
He is survived by his wife, Misty, and mother, Theresa, of Carmi; a sister, Sandra Duvall-Siegel, of Evansville; two sons Nick Duvall, of Norris City, and Kaleb (Christina) Cushman, of Larned, Kansas; a grandson, Aiden; stepdaughters, Kailynn Castro, Laiken Dodson, and Hailea Castro; nephews, Christopher (Katie) Siegel and Evan (Hayley) Siegel, along with several other nieces, nephews, and cousins.
