The Cardinals trailed by one entering the inning before Jordan Walker laced a two-run single to put St. Louis up for good. JoJo Romero picked up his fourth win in relief, while Riley O’Brien earned his first save. The Cardinals are in fourth place in the NL Central at 58-and-58. They host the Cubs tomorrow night.
Chicago Cubs 6, Cincinnati Reds 1 The Chicago Cubs salvaged their series against the Cincinnati Reds with a 6-1 win in the series finale from Wrigley Field. Seiya Suzuki hit his 27th home run of the season in the victory, while Dansby Swanson and Ian Happ also went deep. Cade Horton earned his sixth win after striking out six over five-and-two-thirds scoreless innings. The Northsiders are in second place in the NL Central at 66-and-48. They visit the Cardinals tomorrow night.

Illini Land 2026 Recruit
(Champaign, IL) — The Illinois Fighting Illini men’s basketball team is bolstering its 2026 recruiting class. Three-star forward Landon Davis committed to the Illini yesterday. The Iowa native chose Illinois over the likes of Drake and Northern Iowa. Davis is the second player in a week to commit to the Illini after four-star guard Ethan Brown did so last Wednesday.

Football is officially back for all 32 teams. A tripleheader kicks off Week One of the NFL preseason tonight. The Colts clash with the Ravens in Baltimore, the Bengals and Eagles square off in Philly and the nightcap features the Raiders and Seahawks dueling in Seattle. A trio of matchups are also on the slate for Friday while most of the league plays on Saturday. The Dolphins-Bears and Saints-Chargers matchups wrap up the first of three exhibition weeks on Sunday.

(Pittsburgh, PA) — A veteran quarterback is happy to suit up for his team’s preseason opener. The 41-year-old is the oldest active player in the league and rarely plays in exhibition games. Backups Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson are expected to get most of the reps.

(Foxboro, MA) — Tempers flared between the Patriots and Commanders during their joint practice in Foxboro. New England head coach Mike Vrabel took at least one shot while trying to break up a scrum on Wednesday. Vrabel was later seen holding a bag of ice on his right cheek, which had been bloodied. No players were ejected from practice. The Pats and Commanders will open their preseason slate on Friday night at Gillette Stadium.

(East Rutherford, NJ) — The Giants are being cautious with one of their top players. Wide receiver Malik Nabers did not participate in the final few periods of Wednesday’s practice. Nabers said the lack of reps is part of a process he has been following to stay healthy. The second-year wideout missed spring practices due to a toe problem and has also dealt with a shoulder injury this summer. Head coach Brian Daboll has yet to indicate if Nabers and the rest of his starters will play in Saturday’s preseason game.

(Boston, MA) — The Red Sox are locking up a young stud. According to ESPN, the Sox have signed rookie outfielder Roman Anthony to an eight-year contract extension. The deal is for 130-million-dollars, but could max out at 230-million-dollars, and includes a team option for a ninth year. Anthony is hitting .283 with two home runs and 19 runs batted in over his first 46 games in the big leagues.

(Undated) — A member of the Athletics’ bullpen has undergone successful shoulder surgery. A’s reliever Jose Leclerc [[ luh-KLURK ]] had surgery on his right shoulder after being shut down for the season on July 25th. The 31-year-old is set to remain in Dallas to go through rehabilitation after having the procedure in Arlington. Leclerc was 0-and-1 with a 6.00 ERA through 10 appearances this season. It was his first season with the A’s after spending the first nine years of his career with the Texas Rangers. Leclerc signed a one-year, 10-million-dollar deal with the A’s this past winter.

(Denver, CO) — The Rockies will be without a member of their infield for the foreseeable future. Colorado has placed infielder Thairo [[ TYE-row ]] Estrada on the 10-day injured list due to a right hamstring strain. The 29-year-old has previously spent time on the IL this year because of a fractured right wrist and a sprained thumb. Estrada is batting .253 with three home runs and 21 RBIs through 39 games played this season. The team recalled infielder Adael [[ ah-DIE-el ]] Amador from Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move.

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day told the media on Wednesday that the competition between Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz is going to go “right down to the wire.” They’re vying for their first real action as both players have only thrown a combined 34 passes in college football games.
