St. Louis Cardinals 3, Colorado Rockies 2 The St. Louis Cardinals scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth during a 3-2 win over the Colorado Rockies at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals trailed by a run before Brendan Donovan hit a two-run, go-ahead double to give St. Louis the lead for good. Kyle Leahy earned his third win in relief. The Cards have won four of five and will try to secure their third series-win in a row when they host the Colorado Rockies at Busch Stadium tonight. The Cardinals are in fourth place in the NL Central with a 61-and-59 record. Matthew Liberatore mans the rubber for St. Louis tonight. First pitch is slated for 6:45PM.
The Chicago Cubs will try to get back in the win column when they begin a series against the Toronto Blue Jays from Rogers Centre tonight. (Miami, FL) — The Dolphins are suffering a blow to their backfield. ESPN reports Alexander Mattison underwent season-ending neck surgery. The running back got hurt after catching a 21-yard pass in Sunday’s preseason game against the Bears in Chicago. He is expected to make a full recovery. Mattison signed a one-year deal with Miami in the offseason and made seven starts for the Raiders last year.

(Los Angeles, CA) — Los Angeles Rams star quarterback Matthew Stafford did not make his anticipated return to the practice field on Monday. Stafford was expected to take part in individual drills in his return to practice from an aggravated disk in his back. The 37-year-old threw 68 passes during a workout on Saturday at the team’s practice facility, but LA coach Sean McVay said that his QB did not feel good enough to throw Monday. McVay said last week that the team is being cautious about Stafford’s back, but he would be able to play if it was the regular season.

(Santa Clara, CA) — San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan is expecting his star wide receiver to be back on the field before midseason. Shanahan said that he views a likely return for wideout Brandon Aiyuk [[ EYE-yook ]] to be around Week Six. Aiyuk remains on the physically unable to perform list as he continues to recover from a torn ACL and MCL that he suffered during Week Seven last season. The Niners are already facing injury concerns at the receiver position with Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings, Jacob Cowing and rookie Jordan Watkins all currently sidelined. Shanahan sees a similar timetable to return to action for safety Malik Mustapha and quarterback Kurtis Rourke, who are both dealing with ACL injuries.

(Houston, TX) — The Texans may be without one of their offensive weapons for the foreseeable future. Houston tight end Brevin Jordan had to be carted off the field after suffering a lower leg injury during Monday’s practice. The fifth-year player was injured during an 11-on-11 drill when he jumped and attempted to make a catch down the seam from quarterback C.J. Stroud. Jordan immediately fell to the ground and grabbed his lower right leg and then tried to walk it off before being carted off. The 25-year-old missed all but two games last season after tearing his ACL in Week Two. Jordan has 53 catches for 532 yards and five touchdowns through his first four NFL seasons.

(Las Vegas, NV) — The Nevada Supreme Court has made its ruling on Jon Gruden’s lawsuit against the NFL regarding his leaked damaging emails. The Court sided with Gruden with a 5-2 ruling in his lawsuit that alleged the league leaked his emails to the media before he resigned from the team in 2021. The justices did not determine whether or not the NFL had leaked Gruden’s emails, but found that the league’s decision to force his complaint into arbitration proceedings overseen by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was “unconscionable.” The NFL’s only remaining avenue would be an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

(Tuscaloosa, AL) — The Crimson Tide have settled on their starting signal caller. According to ESPN, Ty Simpson will be the starting quarterback to begin Alabama’s season. Simpson served as the backup for each of the past two seasons. He beat out redshirt sophomore Austin Mack and true freshman Keelon Russell for the starting job. Alabama opens the season at Florida State on August 30th.

(Bronx, NY) — The Yankees received some positive news regarding the health of their best pitcher. Veteran right-hander Gerrit Cole threw the ball 20 times off flat ground on Monday. Cole is recovering from a Tommy John surgery that has kept him sidelined all season. The 34-year-old began his throwing program five months after having an internal brace inserted into his right elbow.

(Indianapolis, IN) — Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White provided an update regarding the status of star Caitlin Clark on Monday. White said that Clark has been progressing from an injured right groin but still is not practicing. Clark has not played since suffering the injury on July 15th. She has already been ruled out of Tuesday’s matchup against the Dallas Wings.
