Illinois crop conditions dipped slightly last week, according to the USDA’s latest crop progress and condition report.
As of August 10th, 63% of Illinois corn was rated in good to excellent condition, down 6% from the previous week, with 98% silking, 68% in the dough stage, and 19% dented. The five-year averages for these stages are 97%, 66%, and 11%, respectively.
Soybean conditions also declined, with 57% rated good to excellent, down 6% from last week. Blooming reached 92% and pod setting reached 76%, both near the five-year averages.
For the week ending August 10th, Illinois farmers had 6.1 days suitable for fieldwork. The statewide average temperature was 76.5 degrees, 2.7 degrees above normal, while precipitation averaged 0.22 inches, 0.73 inches below normal.
Topsoil moisture was rated 13% very short, 24% short, 52% adequate, and 11% surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 12% very short, 23% short, 55% adequate, and 10% surplus.
Corn condition ratings were 5% very poor, 6% poor, 26% fair, 47% good, and 16% excellent. Soybean condition ratings were 5% very poor, 9% poor, 29% fair, 43% good, and 14% excellent.
