The 5th District Appellate Court in Mt. Vernon has upheld the conviction and 45-year prison sentence of 35-year-old Jeffrey Isham of Mt. Carmel, who was found guilty of predatory criminal sexual assault in December 2022.

Isham was charged in September 2019 for an incident involving an 11-year-old family member, who testified that Isham dragged her by the hair into a bathroom at his Keensburg home, where the assault occurred. A Wabash County jury deliberated just 90 minutes before returning a guilty verdict on December 8, 2021.

On appeal, Isham argued the trial evidence was insufficient to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, that his 45-year sentence was excessive, that he received ineffective legal counsel, and that errors occurred during jury selection.

In a 2-1 decision issued last Monday, the appellate court rejected Isham’s arguments and affirmed both the conviction and sentence for the Class X felony.
