Illinois State Police Troop 9 Commander, Captain Brian Wilson, has announced that the ISP will conduct Alcohol Countermeasure Enforcement, or ACE, patrols in Wayne, Edwards, Clay, Hamilton and Effingham counties during August and September, focusing on preventing, detecting, and taking enforcement action in response to violations associated with impaired driving and illegal transportation or consumption of alcohol or drugs. The ISP also announced that they will be conducting Nighttime Enforcement Patrols in Wayne, White, Wabash, Marion, Richland, Fayette, Effingham, and Lawrence counties during September, focusing on enforcement action in response to impaired driving and occupant restraint violations between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
State police say alcohol and drug impairment are estimated to be a factor in over 47 percent of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in Illinois. They also say half of all fatal crashes occur at night, and that there is one alcohol related traffic fatality every 39 minutes in the United States. The projects are funded through the Illinois Department of Transportation.
