The Mt. Vernon Police Department responded to reports of possible gunshots on Sunday morning, around 11:24 a.m. near South 34th Street and Peach. When officers arrived, they discovered a vehicle involved in an accident and evidence of a shooting.

Shortly afterward, police located the other vehicle involved in the 600 block of Strawberry. Two victims were found inside—one refused treatment, while the other was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The Mt. Vernon Fire Department, Litton’s Ambulance, and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies assisted at the scene.

Detectives obtained and executed a search warrant at the offender’s apartment in Mt. Vernon. The suspect was later located in Centralia and transported back to Mt. Vernon for questioning.

Police emphasized the incident was not random, but a targeted act of violence.

At the conclusion of the investigation, 22-year-old Amil Ganaway of Mt. Vernon was charged with:

Two counts of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm

Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm

Unlawful Possession of a Firearm (Revoked FOID Status)

Ganaway is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail.
