HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY:
The FCHS Lady Mules Cross Country team finished 1st on Monday at the Herrin Invite ahead of Vienna, DuQuoin, and Marion. Five Fairfield runners finished as medalists by finishing in the top 10. Emeri Sager finished 2nd overall, followed by Remi Taylor-3rd, Adi Hickey-6th, Jayce Couch-8th, and Brianna Meeks-9th. Two other Lady Mules also finished inside the top 20, Ellanie Vanway-13th and Gabby Zurliene-17th

The Cubs surrendered three runs in the bottom of the first and trailed the rest of the way. Matt Shaw drove in Chicago’s only run, while Shota Imanaga was charged with his seventh loss after allowing three runs on five hits in six innings. The Northsiders remain in second place in the NL Central at 81-and-63. They send Cade Horton to the mound against Atlanta tonight.

The Cardinals led by two entering the sixth before surrendering four runs in the inning. Alec Burleson hit a two-run homer in the losing effort, while Gordon Graceffo was charged with his first loss in relief. St. Louis remains in fourth place in the NL Central at 72-and-73. The Cardinals send Matthew Liberatore to the mound against the Mariners tonight.

(Undated) — The first week of the NFL season is in the books after the Vikings rallied for a 27-24 win over the Bears on Monday Night Football. Minnesota is tied atop the NFC North with Green Bay after the Packers destroyed the Lions in their home opener. The defending Super Bowl champions opened the season with a victory after the Eagles topped the Cowboys. Kansas City is the only team in the AFC West without a win after falling to the Los Angeles Chargers in Sao Paulo.

(Santa Clara, CA) — The 49ers will be without their star tight end for the foreseeable future. San Francisco’s George Kittle will sit out a few weeks because of a hamstring injury that he sustained during the team’s season-opening victory over the Seattle Seahawks. Kittle had four catches for 25 yards and a touchdown in the first game of the new season before departing with the injury. Niners coach Kyle Shanahan also added that quarterback Brock Purdy is dealing with shoulder and toe injuries. The ailments are serious enough that the team is unsure if Purdy will be available for the team’s Week Two contest.

(Metairie, LA) — The Saints are likely to be without a member of their secondary for the rest of the season. New Orleans coach Kellen Moore said that safety Julian Blackmon is likely done for the year after suffering a shoulder injury in the team’s season opener. Blackmon signed with New Orleans during training camp and played every defensive snap in the team’s Week One loss to the Arizona Cardinals. The injury was not discovered until a few hours after the game when Blackmon got home. The 27-year-old had seven total tackles in the season opener. He played the first five years of his NFL career with the Indianapolis Colts.

(Philadelphia, PA) — The Eagles are bolstering their backfield. ESPN reports the team acquired Tank Bigsby from the Jaguars on Monday in exchange for fifth-and-sixth-round picks in next year’s draft. The running back racked up more than 750 yards to go with seven touchdowns last season. Bigsby is also a reliable kick returner, averaging almost 30 yards per run back in his career.

(Miami, FL) — The Dolphins are dealing with a pair of significant injuries to starters. Head coach Mike McDaniel told the media on Monday that right guard James Daniels and cornerback Storm Duck are out for the team’s Week Two matchup against the Patriots. Daniels is working through a pectoral issue while Duck has an ankle ailment. Both players could miss several weeks.

(East Rutherford, NJ) — The Giants aren’t ready to make a change under center. Head coach Brian Daboll confirmed on Monday that the G-Men are sticking with veteran quarterback Russell Wilson as the team’s starter. Wilson completed 17 of his 37 pass attempts for 168 yards in New York’s season-opening loss to the Washington Commanders. Rookie Jaxson Dart served as the backup with veteran Jameis Winston the emergency third quarterback. The Giants visit the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

(Cleveland, OH) — The Browns are playing it slow with a potentially explosive player on offense. Head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters “we’ll see” when asked if Quinshon Judkins will make his debut against the Ravens in Week Two. He signed his rookie deal over the weekend after domestic violence charges were dropped against the running back. Judkins was taken 36th-overall in April’s draft.

(Foxboro, MA) — The Patriots appear to be on different pages when it comes to their relationship with Bill Belichick. Head coach Mike Vrabel said Monday that, to his knowledge, Belichick is welcome at the Patriots’ facility, and nothing surprises him when it comes to Belichick’s decision to ban New England scouts at North Carolina. Vrabel mentioned Belichick’s return to Gillette Stadium for Tom Brady’s jersey retirement in 2024.

(Philadelphia, PA) — The Phillies expect their star shortstop will return for the playoffs. The team placed Trea Turner on the 10-day injured list on Monday with a Grade One hamstring strain. The 32-year-old got hurt after running out a ground ball in Sunday’s loss to the Marlins. Turner is leading the National League in batting average at .305 and hits with almost 180.

(Gainesville, FL) — Florida football is making sure one of its players is held accountable for his actions. Head coach Billy Napier told reporters on Monday that Brendan Bett will make a public apology for spitting at a South Florida offensive lineman during the team’s upset loss to its in-state rival on Saturday. The defensive tackle got ejected with about two minutes left in the game.
