BILL BRUCE MEMORIAL SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT SET FOR SEPTEMBER 13TH:
The annual Bill Bruce Memorial Softball Tournament will take place on Saturday beginning at 9:00 a.m. at Southwest Park in Fairfield. The four-team tournament will be played under SIJHSAA regulations with each team guaranteed two games. A time limit will be in effect, with no new inning beginning after one hour and 15 minutes. Seeding for this year’s event is as follows:
1). New Hope
2). Cisne
3). Fairfield
4). Jasper
Opening-round games start at 9:00 a.m., with New Hope vs. Jasper and Cisne vs. Fairfield. The winners and losers of those contests will meet at 10:30 a.m.

WEDNESDAY GIRLS AREA HIGH SCHOOL GOLF RESULTS:
Mt Carmel Girls Golf Team continues to excel, and on Wednesday they won the Title at the Olney Invitational with a team score of 136, which was 31 strokes ahead of second place Effingham. Elyse Swanson of Mt Carmel was the medalist with around of 33, which is -1under par. The Lady Aces are the defending State Champions, and they continue to play like it.

Carson Kelly went deep with a solo homer, while Seiya Suzuki’s sacrifice fly in the fifth inning stood as the game-winning run. Chicago has won back-to-back games. The Northsiders are in second place in the NL Central at 83-and-63. Three-time All-Star first baseman Anthony Rizzo is retiring as a Chicago Cub. The team announced Rizzo’s retirement on social media. Rizzo played 14 seasons in the league, spending ten of them with Chicago. He was a key contributor to the Cubs’ World Series championship in 2016, its first in over 100 years. Across his career, including time with the San Diego Padres and New York Yankees, Rizzo hit 303 home runs and had 965 RBIs. The Cubs will honor Rizzo on Saturday before the first pitch against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Ryan Fernandez gave up a walk-off home run to Leo Rivas in the bottom of the 13th and was charged with the loss in relief. Ivan Herrera went deep in the losing effort. The Cardinals are in fourth place in the NL Central at 72-and-75. They visit Milwaukee tomorrow night.

NHL NEWS:
The St. Louis Blues are adding a pair of prospects to their roster. The team signed Justin Carbonneau and Nikita Susuev to two-way, entry-level contracts yesterday. Carbonneau was a first-round pick earlier this year, while Susuev is a 2023 seventh rounder. St. Louis begins preseason with a game against the Stars on September 20th.

Shanahan also noted that it is possible that Purdy may miss multiple games as he recovers from injuries to his toe and left shoulder.
