LADY MULES TO COMPETE IN CROSSROADS CLASSIC AT EFFINGHAM:
The Fairfield Lady Mules Volleyball Team will compete in the Crossroads Classic in Effingham this weekend, Friday, September 12th, and Saturday, September 13th.

Tonight, pool play will be held at Effingham Junior High School. The Lady Mules will face McCracken County, KY at 6:00 p.m. and Normal University at 7:05 p.m. Bracket play continues Saturday, with Fairfield scheduled for three matches. Their first match will be at either 8:30 a.m. or 9:40 a.m., depending on Friday’s pool play results.

BILL BRUCE MEMORIAL SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT SET FOR SEPTEMBER 13TH

The annual Bill Bruce Memorial Softball Tournament will take place on Saturday beginning at 9:00 a.m. at Southwest Park in Fairfield.

The four-team tournament will be played under SIJHSAA regulations with each team guaranteed two games. A time limit will be in effect, with no new inning beginning after one hour and 15 minutes.

Seeding for this year’s event is as follows:

New Hope

Cisne

Fairfield

Jasper

Opening-round games start at 9:00 a.m., with New Hope vs. Jasper and Cisne vs. Fairfield. The winners and losers of those contests will meet at 10:30 a.m

 

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL:

The Frontier Lady Bobcats are back in action at the Lake Land Tournament in Mattoon today and tomorrow
 Today, Frontier takes on #16 Mineral Area College at 3 p.m.
Saturday, they’ll battle #17 Indian Hills Community College at 11 a.m.

The St. Louis Cardinals aim to avoid a fourth loss in a row when they visit the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field. The Cardinals were just swept by the Seattle Mariners earlier in the week. St. Louis is in fourth place in the NL Central at 72-and-75. Andre Pallante starts for the Cardinals tonight. First pitch is at 7:10PM.

The Cubs open up a weekend series against the Tampa Bay Rays with a game at Wrigley Field this afternoon. The Northsiders took two of three from the Atlanta Braves earlier in the week. The Cubs are in second place in the NL Central with an 83-and-63 record. Matthew Boyd starts for Chicago this afternoon.

The number-nine Illinois Fighting Illini will try to stay undefeated when they host Western Michigan at Memorial Stadium tomorrow. The Illini crushed Duke 45-19 on the road last weekend to improve to 2-and-0 on the year. Illinois is 4-and-2 all-time against Western Michigan. Tomorrow’s game starts at 6:00PM and can be heard on WFIW-AM 1390 on the Illini Sports Radio Network powered by Learfield with the pregame show at 5pm.

Jordan Love threw for almost 300 yards in the comfortable win. Sunday night’s game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Buffalo Bills was the second most-watched, with nearly 25-million. Jackson apologized and said he should have let security handle the situation. The league said the Ravens handled the matter internally and no further action or fines are needed. Additionally, a bottle was thrown near Ravens running back Derrick Henry after he scored a touchdown.

The Brooklyn Nets posted a message of support through their X account. Collins became the first openly gay athlete in one of the four major North American sports leagues in 2013. The Stanford product was drafted in the first round of the 2001 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets before being traded to the then-New Jersey Nets.
