Jefferson Fire officials say a semi ran off northbound Interstate 57 at the 102 mile marker south of Dix early Thursday morning, injuring the driver.
The impact caused the cab and trailer to separate, and the trailer ruptured, spilling some of its load of 15 totes carrying an unregulated chemical. A regional hazmat team responded to contain the spill until an environmental services crew arrived. Firefighters reported pumping up leakage from one and a half totes.
Authorities said the chemical, in its diluted form, did not pose an environmental threat.
Northbound I-57 traffic may have been shut down briefly, with one lane reopened near the crash site shortly afterward.
Illinois State Police have not yet released details of the accident or the identity of the driver.
