The driver involved in a fatal crash earlier this week in Jefferson County has been cited.
Media reports say 75 year old Veena K. Gupta of Mt. Vernon, IL was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and was issued a mandatory court appearance. Gupta was driving a 2009 Mercedes which police say struck 83 year old Charles Cimera of rural Jefferson County in his yard on Thursday. Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies found Cimera unresponsive and seriously injured on property in the 16000 block of North Casey Pike Lane. Cimera was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jefferson County Coroner. The Sheriff’s Office had stated that Gupta’s vehicle struck a tree and stopped in a neighboring yard, after striking Cimera. They also said preliminary evidence indicated Gupta drove off Casey Pike Lane onto Cimera’s property.
An Illinois State Police Crash Reconstructionist assisted the Sheriff’s Office in the investigation.
