HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL:
The Fairfield Lady Mules Volleyball team participated in the Crossroads Classic Tournament in Effingham. In Friday’s Pool Play, Fairfield fell to McCracken County (KY) 21-25 & 8-25 and also lost to Normal University 20-25 & 20-25. This relegated them to Bronze Flight in Saturday’s Bracket Play.
In Saturday’s action, Fairfield beat Champaign Central 25-18 & 25-17 and got past St. Louis Nerinx Hall 25-18 & 25-17. In the Bronze Flight Championship Game Fairfield fell to Chatham Glenwood 15-25 & 15-25 finishing 2nd in the Bronze Flight.
On Saturday, the Wayne City Lady Indians Volleyball Team picked up a big victory over Johnston City in 2 sets
The Edwards County Lady Lions Volleyball team competed in the Shelbyville Invitational Tournament on Saturday. The Lady Lions won the tournament for the 3rd straight time after beating Pana in the Championship Game. Along the way, they scored victories over Marshall, Pana, Heritage, Casey-Westfield and Pana again in the championship. Grace McCarty and Grace Bishop were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Carmi-White County Lady Bulldogs Volleyball Team won their 3rd straight Benton Invitational Tournament Championship on Saturday with victories over Grayville, Harrisburg, West Frankfort, Chester, and Massac County in the Championship. Jaya Smith and Caroline Simmons were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The New Hope Lady Panthers Softball Team won the annual Bill Bruce Memorial Softball Tournament on Saturday, beating Cisne/Geff 14-2 in the Championship Game. The Lady Panthers are now 17-0 on the season.

The Cardinals scored three runs in the top of the second and led the rest of the way. Miles Mikolas earned his eighth win by holding the Brewers to two runs on five hits in five innings, while Riley O’Brien picked up his fourth save. St. Louis snapped a five-game losing streak to improve to 73-and-77. The Cardinals send Matthew Liberatore to the mound against Cincinnati tonight.

Chicago Cubs 4, Tampa Bay Rays 3 The Cubs erased a two-run deficit to take down the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 in the finale of a three-game series in the Windy City. Ian Happ hit a solo homer in the sixth inning before Nico Hoerner hit a two-run double in the seventh to put the Cubs ahead for good. Hoerner finished with three RBIs. Javier Assad earned his third win out of the bullpen and Andrew Kittredge notched his fifth save as the Cubs improved to 85-and-64. #9 Illinois 38, Western Michigan 0 The number-eight Illinois Fighting Illini are still undefeated following a 38-0 rout of Western Michigan at Memorial Stadium on Saturday. The Illini only led by ten at halftime before outscoring Western Michigan 28-0 the rest of the way. Luke Altmyer passed for 196 yards and two touchdowns in the victory, while Kaden Feagin rushed for 100 yards and a score. The 3-and-0 Illini are at number-17 Indiana this Saturday.

The 28-year-old was taken into the locker room and ruled out for the rest of the game. ESPN reports the injury could require surgery. Burrow was replaced by backup Jake Browning, who led the team to a comeback victory.

(Frisco, TX) — The Cowboys are adding a veteran pass rusher to the roster. Dallas owner and general manager Jerry Jones said that the team is signing Jadeveon Clowney following an 0-and-2 start to the season. ESPN reports the deal is for one year and worth up to six-million-dollars. The 32-year-old visited the Cowboys last week and will now join his seventh team since being selected first overall in the 2014 NFL Draft. The three-time Pro Bowler has totaled 409 tackles, 58 sacks and 15 forced fumbles through 11 seasons. He has also played for the Texans, Seahawks, Titans, Browns, Ravens and Panthers.

(Baltimore, MD) — The Ravens almost poached a top draft prospect from a division rival. ESPN reports the team was planning to select Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round of April’s draft. However, the quarterback didn’t want to be on a roster with Lamar Jackson, where he wouldn’t have a chance to play anytime soon. The Browns traded up to take Sanders three picks later at Number-144.

(Honolulu, HI) — The lawyers for Major League Baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani are moving to dismiss a lawsuit filed against him and his agent last month. Ohtani and his agent, Nez Balelo, were accused of causing a Hawaii real estate investor and broker to be fired from a 240-million-dollar luxury housing development on the Big Island’s Hapuna Coast. They were sued on August 8th and have been accused of abuse of power that allegedly resulted in tortuous interference and unjust enrichment by developer Kevin J. Hayes Sr. and real estate broker Tomoko Matsumoto. The two were dropped from the development deal by Kingsbarn Realty Capital, who called Hayes’ and Matsumoto’s allegations “completely frivolous and without merit.”

(Undated) — Week three of the college football season is in the books. Number three Georgia beat 15th-ranked Tennessee 44-41 in overtime in Knoxville. Number 17 Texas A&M scored with 13 seconds left to beat eighth-ranked Notre Dame 41-40 in South Bend. In other games in the top 25, number four LSU beat Florida 20-10, Vanderbilt upset 10th-ranked South Carolina 31-7 and Georgia Tech toppled number 11 Clemson 24-21 on a field goal as time expired. The Tigers dropped from the rankings after the loss.

(Undated) — The top of the latest college football coaches poll looks the same. Ohio State, Penn State, Georgia, LSU and Oregon are the top five teams for another week. Texas A and M took one of the biggest jumps after climbing seven spots to number 10. South Carolina dropped 14 spots to number 24. Georgia Tech, Missouri, Vanderbilt and Auburn are all ranked after not being included in last week’s poll.

(Los Angeles, CA) — UCLA is parting ways with their head football coach. The school announced Sunday that DeShaun Foster had been relieved of his duties. The move comes just days after the Bruins were beaten at home by New Mexico, which moved their record to 0-and-3. Foster, who played running back at UCLA from 1998 to 2001, was named head coach ahead of the 2024 season. Tim Skipper will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

(Napa, CA) — Scottie Scheffler added another victory to his resume after winning the Procore Championship. Scheffler finished atop the leaderboard by one stroke at 19 under par. He now has 19 career wins on Tour. Ben Griffin finished second at 18 under. Lanto Griffin finished in third at 17 under par. Defending champion Patton Kizzire failed to make the cut.

(Bristol, TN) — Christopher Bell capped-off the first round of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs after claiming the checkered flag in the Bass Pro Shops Night Race from Bristol Motor Speedway. The driver of the Number-20 car edged Brad Keselowski for the close win. Austin Dillon, Shane van Gisbergen, Alex Bowman and Josh Berry were all eliminated from playoff contention as the Round of 12 begins in New Hampshire next Sunday.
