SUMMER HEAT HOLDS ON IN SOUTHERN ILLINOIS, COOLER WEATHER AND RAIN ON THE WAY

By Mark Wells Sep 16, 2025 | 12:00 PM

Summer isn’t ready to let go just yet across Southern Illinois, with temperatures expected to stay well above average through the end of the week. Highs are forecast to reach the low to mid-90s, running about 7 to 10 degrees warmer than normal for mid-September.

While the heat will be noticeable, lower humidity levels mean heat index values shouldn’t climb much beyond the actual temperatures. That will help prevent the kind of oppressive, dangerous heat indices often seen during peak summer months.

The National Weather Service says changes are on the horizon, however. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to arrive late this week and strengthen into the weekend. Rainfall totals are not projected to be heavy, with most areas likely to see less than an inch, but the precipitation will bring a break from the dry stretch.

Along with the rain, temperatures will also begin to ease back, dropping into the 80s by the weekend — a welcome cooldown after a run of 90-degree days.
