HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL FROM SATURDAY:
Fairfield Lady Mules JV Volleyball Team placed 1st in Silver Bracket at the Carterville tournament, 5th overall. They finished the day 3-2 beating Chester, Anna Jonesboro, and Marion and falling to NCOE and Mt. Vernon. Allee King was nominated to the all-tournament.
The Cisne Lady Runnin’ Lions Volleyball Team won the Flora Round-Robin Tournament Saturday, running the table by beating Flora, Dietrich, and Christ Our Rock Lutheran.
The Edwards County Lady Lions Volleyball Team traveled to Metropolis Saturday for the Superman Classic Tournament. Edwards County came away with a 1st Place tournament showing for the 2nd week in a row with victories over Anna-Jonesboro, Graves County, KY, Massac County, and DuQuoin. The Lady Lions’ Grace McCarty and Alice Robb were named to the All-Tournament Team and Grace Bishop was named the Tournament MVP
HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY:
At the Olney Invitational on Saturday, the FCHS Mules Boys Cross Country Team finished 5th overall with a field of 162 runners. Medalists for Fairfield were Ashton King-20th, Kanyen Lingafelter-27th, Jarret Vaughan-34th, and Skylar Bladel-42nd.
The Mules Girls Cross Country Team finished 3rd overall with a field of 101 runners. Medalists for Fairfield were Emeri Sager-15th, Remi Taylor-19th, Adi Hickey-21st, Jaycie Couch-26th, Brianna Meeks-31st, and Ellanie Vanway-32nd.

FAIRFIELD MULES WRESTLING PRESEASON MEETING SCHEDULED:
The Fairfield Community High School wrestling team will hold its 2025-2026 preseason meeting on Tuesday, September 23rd. All interested FCHS students are invited to meet in the weight room at 8:30 a.m. The meeting will cover plans for the upcoming wrestling season, and coaches will be collecting shirt and pant sizes for team warmups. Any FCHS student considering joining the wrestling team this winter is encouraged to attend.

(Bloomington, IN) — The number-23 Illinois Fighting Illini were served a slice of humble pie with a 63-10 loss to number-12 Indiana at Memorial Stadium on Saturday. The Illini were down 35-10 at halftime before getting outscored 28-0 the rest of the way. Luke Altmyer passed for 146 yards and a touchdown in the losing effort. Illinois is 0-and-1 in Big Ten play and 3-and-1 overall. The Illini host number-22 USC this weekend.
Blues Lose In Preseason
(Columbus, MO) — The St. Louis Blues are winless in preseason following a 4-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena. Nikita Alexandrov scored the Blues only goal in the losing effort. St. Louis is 0-2-and-0 in exhibition play. The Blues are back in action against Chicago on Saturday.

Patrick Mahomes passed for 224 yards and one touchdown to help the KC earn its first win of the season and improve to 1-and-2. In other action, the 49ers remained unbeaten with a 16-15 last-second victory over the Cardinals. The Chargers also took down the Broncos 23-20 on a field goal as time expired, while the Buccaneers defeated the Jets 29-27 in the same fashion. The Eagles knocked off the Rams 33-26 in a wild finish in Philly. Week Three wraps up with a Monday Night Football showdown between the Ravens and Lions in Baltimore.

(Santa Clara, CA) — The season appears to be over for Arizona Cardinals running back James Conner. ESPN reports Conner suffered a severe ankle injury in the Cards’ 16-15 loss in San Francisco on Sunday. The injury will require surgery and end his season. The 30-year-old Conner signed a two-year extension last November that will keep him in Arizona through 2026.

(Tampa, FL) — The Buccaneers are hoping one of their star wide receivers avoided a serious injury. Mike Evans left the team’s 29-27 win over the Jets on Sunday with a hamstring issue. The 32-year-old got hurt in the fourth quarter and didn’t return after heading into the locker room. Evans had four catches for more than 30 yards to go with a touchdown before leaving with the injury.

(Undated) — The latest college football coaches poll has been released. Ohio State, Penn State, Georgia, LSU and Oregon are once again the top five teams in the nation. Indiana climbed five spots to number 12, while Illinois dropped 15 spots to number 23. USC is 22nd, BYU is 24th and TCU is 25th after not being included in last week’s poll. Utah, South Carolina and Auburn are the three schools out of the top 25.

(Miami, FL) — The Heat are starting the season behind the eight ball. The team announced Tyler Herro will undergo surgery on his left foot. ESPN reports the All-Star is expected to miss eight weeks, which would cost him about a dozen games to begin the season. Herro led Miami in scoring last year, averaging almost 24 points while notching five-and-a-half assists per game.

(Las Vegas, NV) — A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces has won the WNBA’s 2025 MVP award. She has claimed the award for a record fourth time. Wilson, in an emotional speech, thanked her teammates when she was surprised with award, saying, “it has my name on it, but this one is all of us.” The WNBA says the star center led the league in points per game for the second straight season.

(Philadelphia, PA) — Hockey is mourning the loss of a Hall of Famer. Flyers’ legend Bernie Parent [[ peh-ruhnt ]] passed away. He was 80. The goaltender helped Philly win back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1974-and-75. Parent also won the Vezina in both of those seasons, which is an award given to the best goalie in hockey. He notched more than 230 wins with the Flyers over his 13-year career.

(Loudon, NH) — Ryan Blaney is the first NASCAR Cup Series racer to advance to the next stage of the playoffs after earning a victory at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday. The driver of the Number-12 car cruised down victory lane in the Mobil 1 301 to kick off the Round of 12. Josh Berry, William Byron, Joey Logano and Chase Elliott rounded out the top-five finishers. The playoffs continue next Sunday at Kansas Speedway.
