President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice is arguing against Illinois’ assault weapons ban. While appearing before the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals yesterday, Harmeet Dhillon said the AR-15 and similar guns are “clearly” protected by the Second Amendment. The appeals court previously upheld the ban, which Governor Pritzker signed into law in response to the deadly Fourth of July shooting in Highland Park in 2022. It isn’t clear when the panel will rule on the constitutionality of the law.
The Illinois Department of Public Health is urging Illinoisans to take proper precautions against tick bites. The reminder comes after an Illinois resident became seriously ill with a tickborne illness that hadn’t previously been detected in this state. Health officials are investigating whether the resident was exposed to the illness through a tick bite in Illinois or in a different state. Tips on avoiding tickborne illnesses including walking in the center of trails, avoiding wooded, bushy areas with high grass and leaf litter, wearing light-colored clothing, and applying an EPA-registered insect repellent.
