Two Southern Illinois mayors have been elected to leadership roles with the Illinois Municipal League (IML). The elections took place September 20 during the IML’s 112th Annual Conference at the Hyatt Regency Chicago.

Mayor John C. Lewis of Mount Vernon was elected First Vice President of the statewide organization, while Mayor Joe Judge of Mt. Carmel was elected to serve as one of 34 Vice Presidents. Mayor Rita Ali of Peoria was chosen as Second Vice President, and Village President Sheila Chalmers-Currin of Matteson will serve as President.

IML, which represents the interests of 1,294 municipalities across Illinois, also seated seven past presidents on its Board of Directors.

Mayor Judge called his election a privilege, emphasizing the importance of municipal unity in shaping policy. “By working together, we can champion the needs of local government to bring about a brighter future for all communities and residents throughout Illinois,” he said.

The IML advocates on issues such as infrastructure, economic development, and ensuring that municipalities of all sizes have a voice in statewide decision-making.
