LAWMAKERS CALL FOR ACTION AFTER RECORD USPS MAIL DELAYS

The United States Postal Service has come under increased scrutiny from lawmakers in recent months. In August, an audit revealed that the St. Louis Processing and Distribution Center experienced more than 2.5 million delayed pieces of mail between June 3-4—the largest delayed mail backlog ever recorded in a USPS field audit.

Now, Illinois Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski is calling for action. Budzinski has joined Democrat Congressman Chris Pappas of New Hampshire and Republican Congressmen Jack Bergman of Michigan and Andrew Garbarino of New York as co-chairs of the Congressional Postal Service Caucus. Budzinski emphasized that the USPS must improve its performance.

She also stressed the importance of protecting the jobs of more than 6,000 USPS employees. Earlier this year, Congresswoman Budzinski introduced the bipartisan Protect Postal Performance Act. The bill aims to prevent downsizing of USPS facilities in underserved areas, enhance oversight of changes to delivery schedules, and increase public transparency regarding proposed operational changes.
